You might think that all that’s left is to wait until your roof is complete, but you should still stay involved with the project. This means regularly communicating with your roofing contractor, something that can seem daunting but is actually very simple. Here are a few tips that will help you stay in touch with your contractor until you have a good roof over your head again.

Provide Reliable Contact Methods

If you’re going to have a contractor working on any part of your home, you owe it to them to be easy to reach you. Whether this is by phone, email or text message, you need to provide at least one reliable contact method. Even if the project is going as smoothly as possible, your roofing contractor should be able to speak with you at any given time.

Voice Your Concerns

You have hopefully spoken to your contractor at great length before your roofing project even started, but you shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions and voice your concerns even as the project is underway. A good contractor will be completely transparent with you, so go ahead and ask exactly what they are doing, when they will be finished, or if everything is going according to your plan. You shouldn’t dog the contractor or any other workers during every step of the project, but you should never be afraid to speak up if you feel like you should.

Educate Yourself About the Roofing Process

Since this is your roof that is being repaired, you owe it to yourself to know exactly what is happening at any given time. This does fit in with our previous tip about voicing your concerns and asking questions, but it also means doing research on your own to understand what it means to repair or replace a roof. Make a note of what your roofing contractor is doing and what materials are being used, and take some time to learn about what you’ve been told. This will keep you involved in the roofing process and make it easier for the roofing company of your choice to communicate with you.

Have Everything In Writing

When you meet with your contractor to discuss the details of your roofing project, make sure to get everything in writing. This includes not just the overall cost of the project, but how long it will take, the kinds of materials that will be used, and whether the contractor is licensed and insured (note: the contractor should always be insured). Having all of this in a written document protects you and the contractor from any wrongdoing or mistakes that could be made. It represents proof of the deal that was made for your home, so keep it safe at all times.

Keep In Contact After the Project is Complete

Once your roofing project is complete, you might think that you and your contractor can go your separate ways. While you won’t have much to worry about if the job was done well, it never hurts to remain in contact with any construction contractor who works on your home. You might have some questions regarding the upkeep of your new roof, or you might require some additional repairs sometime in the future. In any event, hold on to your contractor’s contact information. You’ll never know when you might need it.
